weathered oak dining table
The brief was to create a fine weathered oak dining table to complement the aged oak beams, purlins and rafters of this 16th century barn. To achieve this required a unique approach, sourcing weathered oak from the National Trust’s Ashridge Estate.
At 7’6″ sq the table seats 12 comfortably. Due to the size and weight of the tabletop, the frame needed a balance of strength and beauty to perform its function.
The weathered timber results in beautiful shakes – natural cracks that occur during seasoning and add character to the wood. All 25 timbers were finished by hand using traditional tools and techniques with natural oils to bring out the grains.
The result is a strong, handsome, functional piece that comfortably sits centre stage in this magnificent setting.
It is the perfect object on which to break bread and will play host to diners down the ages for generations to come.
